Opal is October’s birthstone and is said to be a great healing gemstone and good at improving communication and self confidence.  The colours are to represent the sunlight sparking on the the ocean surface. 
This fossil coral is estimated to be around 20 million years old, and thought to have formed from a volcanic event.  It should not be confused for protected and endangered coral reef from the modern oceans of today.
